It is odd that, in a forum devoted to the psychology of wisdom, there is little written about the personal characteristics that identify a wise person. I began studying this area about 11 years before Dr. Goldberg\'s book, and my research continues. Here is a quick list of the characteristics I\'ve discovered that identify a wise person, fyi (note copyright). 1. Learning, including knowledge of some subject in depth, including facts, ideas, methodologies, connections, paradigms, etc. 2. Creative thinking capacity, including the ability to generate new strategies and paradigms to fit new situations. 3. Critical thinking capacity, including the ability to examine ideas in depth, and rational capacity. 4. A richness of human interactions and understanding a human life. 5. Compassion and empathy. 6. Emotional equanimity. 7. The ability to know when to act, and to take appropriate actions when called for. 8. A history of good decisions and advice. 9. Recognition by other thoughtful persons as a wise person. 10. Acknowledgment that one does not know everything: recognition of one\'s limitations. 11. Acknowledgment of the ambiguities of the world. 12. The ability to modify and adapt these behaviours according to the situation. Any comments, corrections, or additions are welcome. Be wise.
